THE SCIENCE OF SOAP MAKING
2 Hours | Understand. Formulate. Create.
For those who want to truly understand what happens when oils become soap, this is our most in-depth soap-making experience.
The Science of Soap Making takes you behind the recipe and into the chemistry of soap. We'll explore saponification, fatty acids, oil properties, lye concentration, superfat, trace, curing, and recipe formulation. You'll learn how different oils influence hardness, cleansing, conditioning, bubbles, and the overall character of your finished soap.
We'll also look at how soap recipes are built and adjusted, giving you the foundation to begin thinking like a soap formulator rather than simply following a recipe.
Then you'll put your knowledge into practice by creating 1 kg of your own handmade soap. Your soap will be poured into a silicone-lined wooden soap mold, which you'll take home and keep for future batches.
This class is perfect for the curious maker who wants to move beyond following recipes and gain the knowledge and confidence to create soap intentionally.
You'll learn:
The chemistry of saponification
The properties of different oils and butters
Lye concentration and superfat
How to read, understand, and adjust recipes
The fundamentals of soap formulation
Trace, curing, and common soap-making considerations
You'll make:
1 kg of handmade soap
